A complete guide on scrum master roles and responsibilities and the challenges faced by them.

What is a scrum master?

Before getting to know this term, we should know what does the word SCRUM means?

Its literal meaning is an ordered formation of players, used to restart play, in which the forwards of a team form up with arms interlocked and heads down, and push forward against a similar group from the opposing side. The ball is thrown into the scrum and the players try to gain possession of it by kicking it backwards towards their own side.

This term in organizations is referred to a set of practices used in agile project management that emphasize daily communication and the flexible reassessment of plans that are carried out in short, iterative (involving mathematics and calculations) phases of work.

A scrum master is a person who facilitates the agile development team and in this methodology a team can make changes quickly by self-organizing itself. The process of exchange of information is also controlled by a scrum master between the team working.

Roles of a scrum master:

It is a part of the scrum framework and it does not give any as such authority. This can be better explained through the term ‘Servant Leadership’ which is given to someone who’s an expert in scrum techniques and can coach others. It is vastly different from a project manager who is just responsible for leading the project not guiding others step by step and coach them about new things and techniques.

The scrum master also ensures that the communication, between his tea who is working on a project and the organization for which the project is being done, remains smooth in order to maximize the productivity and output of the work. The role of a scrum master is to ensure too that the daily meetings, planning sessions and sprint retrospectives are being arranged and facilitated properly.

Responsibilities of a scrum master:

·        Help the team to reach the sprint (consensus for what can be achieved during a specific period of time)

·        Help the team to reach consensus scrum daily

·        Help the team to stay focused on the already decided rules for daily scrum

·        Protect the team from outside distractions

·        Clearing the obstacles that are impeding in the team’s progress

·        Establish a comfortable environment for the team to work more effectively

·        Establish and address team dynamics

·        Ensuring a good relationship between the team and project owner as well as the outsiders

Challenges faced while fulfilling the responsibilities:

·        When the team members or the owner or the outsiders resist any change, when they are not flexible enough to adapt a change for the sake of the project or for the comfort of one party only.

·        Sometimes people are flexible towards a change but misunderstandings can occur anywhere.

·        Sometimes people are flexible towards a change and understand it too but they fail to adapt if or perform it properly, it’s the biggest challenge a scrum master can face.
